There are times in all our lives when moving forward in a positive, purposeful direction – or even resting with peace of mind – seems challenging. Most of us experience times in our lives when we feel unsettled, anxious, depressed or struggling through a life changing events or feeling lost. Sometimes circumstances are such that we do not know where to turn or what to do. Having space to explore your thoughts and feelings can transform this darkest chapter of our life.
We all have an innate ability to grow and develop. It's easy to get stuck in repeating patterns which may no longer work for us, or be thrown by unexpected event or trauma that may have happened a long time ago. In any case, the resources for wellness are within you.
The terms “counselling” and “psychotherapy” are often used interchangeably, but there is a slight distinction. Counselling generally refers to short-term consultation while psychotherapy typically refers to longer-term treatment.
Counselling and Psychotherapy offer a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space where you can allow yourself the time and opportunity to discuss and examine your concerns with an experienced professional. Counselling and Psychotherapy are integrative process that addressed personal growth as well as psychological distress. Recent brains scans done before and after psychotherapy show that the brain plastically reorganised itself in treatment. We all have reaction patterns that hide painful ideas, feelings, and memories from conscious awareness. By working through these patterns, we turn implicit memories onto declarative memories that have a clear context. (See Norman Doidge, 'The Brain that changes itself', Penguin Books, Chapter 9). Since psychotherapy involves the exploration and processing of uncomfortable aspects of life, you may at times experience difficult feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, and frustration along with insight and release. It is that working through that allows long term change to take place.
People have many different reasons for seeking support. Some may have recently experienced a painful relationship break-up, or bereavement or problem at work and wish to talk through immediate concerns, others may have more ongoing concerns and worries, and some may wish to make fundamental and long lasting changes onto their life and the way they feel about themselves. But there is no problem or issue that is too big or too small.
Counselling and Psychotherapy are the place to talk openly, exploring your thoughts and feelings, expressing your emotions, frame your experience and find your self again. It is a space to heal.
